Mind Expansion - Leading Cognition - Practical Management

Management is a discipline that must be put into practice to be effective, and result-oriented management is currently the most effective way to respond to and solve problems in an ever-changing business environment. "Practical management, practical consultancy" - the former phrase is the philosophy of management education of management guru Henry Mintzberg and the academic basis of our programme, while the latter is the focus of our programme. According to Mintzberg: "Nurture more experienced managers in practice, make MBA education practice-oriented and develop a new educational model to train modern management talents. This programme will focus on helping students to analyse problems objectively from a consulting perspective, to develop practical solutions in all aspects of business, to pursue effective performance and manage effectively with creativity.

Understanding Management Practice Reaching the Pinnacle of Management

The IPM programme at the HKU Institute for China Business is one of the Institute's most important programmes. With the core objective of "elevating the level of thinking and enhancing the depth of practical management", the IPM programme integrates the theories of business courses with practical business. Throughout the learning process our faculty members with extensive experience in the industry will assist students in linking knowledge with actual business issues. Using their own corporate issues as a starting point for reflection and learning, students will discuss, share, and exchange with other students from different business backgrounds to quickly identify and incorporate what they have learnt and to apply innovative solutions in practical work situations to deliver effective results.

Increasing Managerial Proficiency and Problem-solving Skills

Another feature of this programme is that it highlights students' overall ability to analyse projects and provide solutions. Unlike traditional MBA programmes which focus on theoretical aspects, the IPM programme places greater emphasis on enhancing students' analytical and deployment skills, looking at problems from a higher perspective and developing appropriate solutions. Through their own vast experience as executives in multinational companies and education, the faculty will guide students through case studies and analysis of their corporate issues to continuously empower organisational development as well as personal growth. Through the accumulation of hands-on practice within the company, the learning process is continuously deepened, eventually targeting the actual problems of the company and reinforcing the confidence of professional managers in facing business challenges and the practical skills for strategic planning and execution of objectives. Students will develop the capacity to lead and manage with excellence through the continuous development of their individual effective management experience.

Testimonials

"The IPM programme I chose covers a wide range of subjects, but also focuses on "managing for results". I have benefited greatly from my studies at the University of Hong Kong. At ICB, there are no standard answers, nor are there any unilateral teaching, but rather inspiration and encouragement, "dialogue", independent thinking and real-world cases, and the exploration of the essence of management and methods of improvement. The strict attendance and rigorous learning encouraged me to be more self-disciplined; the open discussions and cross-industry clashes demolished the existing barriers and firewalls; the diverse workshops and enriching corporate visits have broadened my management vision and strategic development ideas. ”

"The study period at the HKU Institute for China Business (HKU ICB) was one of the most grounding experiences in my life: for there was a goal and there were results. When I first started my business, I chose to study at the HKU ICB. While studying, I was able to reorganise my past work experience, reflect on existing problems, adjust my so-called "experienced" but backward methods with new knowledge, etc. The process was clear, and it was diligently lived through, and it was perfect. I thank the HKU ICB and the faculty for such a refreshing and wonderful development! I wish the HKU ICB to be better and better!"

"A person's level is determined by the level of people around him. HKU Institute for China Business (HKU ICB) has gathered a group of outstanding people with ambitions and aspirations, and through active participation in classroom exchanges, corporate visits and case building, students will help each other to be successful. I wish all students can form a deep bond with their classmates and achieve a better future together at HKU ICB. Go for it!"

"The word "addiction" is what a senior student from the University of Hong Kong mentioned when she shared her learning experience before I enrolled in the programme. So I was curious and slightly puzzled. It was not until six months into the programme that I understood what the state of addiction was. So what is it? In the class, case studies are used to help you perceive the world, perceive yourself, and upgrade your perception. Through a lot of discussions and training, different perspectives, different views, and different experiences, a variety of different thinking is brought together, which makes me very inspired and enlightened. Aiming for an A+ on every assignment requires reading and looking up a lot of materials, repeated self-affirmation, denial, re-correction and then finalisation. The process of transformation and growth is painful but beautiful as if a tight string is always pulling you forward, urging you on with a growth mindset, allowing you to become more refined, energetic and confident. I'd say that's a great addictive state to be in! Through practical application, I realised that I should have been exposed to HKU earlier, thanks to a group of excellent teachers with years of experience in international business management with a global perspective and wonderful lectures, which upgraded my cognition and broadened the breadth and depth of my thinking! While gaining knowledge, I am happy to have made friends with a group of like-minded students. I am grateful to have met you!" Thank you HKU!”

"It's been almost a year since I graduated from the IPM at the HKU Institute for China Business (HKU ICB). Last year's graduation ceremony was held in Lee Shau Kee Hall at the University of Hong Kong. Wearing a grand graduation gown, when I heard my name, then proudly strode to the centre of the stage, and was solemnly awarded the graduation certificate by Professor N.R. Liu, the Director of HKU ICB, I suddenly felt that all the nights spent writing homework, the weekend studying, and the project brainstorming had become very precious. The faculty members at HKU ICB are very distinguished, firstly, they are not young, but they all maintain a stylish body, which shows a high degree of self-discipline in daily life; secondly, they are all industry leaders, including many CXOs of multinational companies, so the lesson plans are different from traditional MBA, they are all an innovative combination of theory + practice + classics + contemporary. The must-have module for each month. Since it's a financially rewarding field of study, it's mentally demanding. Fellow classmates who are executives across different industries have clashed ideas in school but remained friends out of school, debate vigorously in class but combine resources afterwards; after graduation, they continue to interact with each other in the class group chat, have dinner and trips together, and return to school regularly for knowledge sharing activities.
