Dr Tim Cheng
Academic Stream Leader (Executive Programmes); Former Key Leader of Channel and Key Account Management of NXP Greater China; Doctor of Business Admin from University of Newcastle, AU; Certified ESG Planner
Dr Tim Cheng is currently the Head for Executive programme at the Institute for China Business, University of Hong Kong. Renowned for his expertise in curriculum design and teaching of executive and innovation management programs, Dr Cheng has demonstrated exceptional achievements in both academia and corporate management. Prior to transitioning to academia, he held key positions at NXP Semiconductors, one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies, accumulating over 25 years of marketing and management experience across Greater China, including major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Taiwan. His professional expertise spans marketing strategy, channel management, and corporate account management, making him a leader in the field.
Dr Cheng is particularly skilled in exploring emerging markets and developing strategic marketing initiatives, with a wealth of hands-on experience. In addition, he has over 15 years of teaching experience and has taught a wide range of courses at prominent institutions in Mainland China and Hong Kong. His passion for teaching and deep knowledge has earned him widespread acclaim from students. The courses Dr Cheng teaches cover a broad spectrum of business disciplines, including marketing, equity design, business planning, leadership, product innovation management, research methodology, project management, consumer behaviour, China business models, corporate governance and social responsibility, brand and channel management, and strategic management.
Dr Cheng's research interests are equally diverse and cutting-edge, focusing on ESG and corporate sustainability strategies, equity structure design, trends in higher education development, and the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystems. His dedication to combining theoretical insights with practical applications has provided valuable strategic guidance to both academia and the corporate world, making him a role model for those who bridge academic research and industry practice.
Dr Cheng academic background is extensive and illustrious, spanning multiple disciplines. He holds a Master of Education (MEd) in Higher Education from the University of Hong Kong, where he was named to the Dean’s Honours List. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Electronics Engineering and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from City University of Hong Kong, a Master of Science (MSc) in Marketing Management from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from the University of Newcastle, Australia. His primary research areas include sustainable strategies in corporate governance and social responsibility, equity design, trends in higher education, AI applications and business analytics, as well as the development of AI industry ecosystems, underscoring his significant influence in both academic and practical domains.
In public service, Dr Cheng also stands out as a Technical Advisor to the Employees Retraining Board (ERB), showcasing his professional expertise and commitment to societal contributions. Furthermore, he holds multiple prestigious professional qualifications, solidifying his status as a leader in the industry. These include the ESG Planner certification from the International Institute for Sustainable Development, Fellowship and Professional Marketer accreditation from the Hong Kong Institute of Marketing, membership and Registered Marketer status with the UK’s Institute of Marketing, and Certification as a Psychological Counselor from the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dr Cheng’s teaching excellence has earned him widespread recognition and acclaim from his students. His distinctive teaching style and captivating approach have twice won him the Outstanding Teacher Award from HKU SPACE in 2019/20 and 2021/22, a testament to his exceptional contributions to education.
