Prof. Lam is the Emeritus Professor of the University of Hong Kong and Honorary Clinical Professor of the School of Public Health. He used to be the first dean of the School of Public Health, head of the Department of Social Medicine, Chair Professor, the Luo Xuhe Foundation Professor of Public Health at the Universt of Hong Kong, and the vice chairman of the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health. Prof. Lam has been appointed by the World Health Organization as short-term consultant, temporary advisor or expert participant for more than ten times. Prof. Lam has won the World Health Organization Tobacco Control Award and Medal, the University of Hong Kong Outstanding Teaching Award, the Outstanding Graduate Supervisor Award and the Outstanding Researcher Award, the Chinese Smoking Hazard Prevention Contribution Award, and the China Tobacco Control Outstanding Contribution Award.  He was also awarded the honorary citizen of Guangzhou. Prof. Lam has conducted research on tobacco control for more than 40 years, and promoted the government to strengthen tobacco control and support smoking cessation. He has contributed to the complete ban of e-cigarettes and emerging tobacco products in Hong Kong.  He was appointed Justice of Peace in July 2005, and awarded Bronze Bauhinia Star Award in July 2012.

Prof. Lam graduated from Faculty of Medicine, HKU with the MBBS degree in 1975.  He got an MSc degree in medical sociology and an MSc degree in occupational medicine in 1980 and 1981 respectively from The University of London.  He obtained his MD degree by research from HKU in 1988. His awards from HKU included University Teaching Fellowship 1999-2000, Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award 2000-01, Outstanding Researcher Award 2001-02, and Long Service Award (for over 45 years). He has published approximately one thousand papers in international journals (SCI).
