Mr. Sum is currently the Senior Programme Director and Principal Lecturer of HKU Institute for China Business , where he is responsible for the financial management programmes and teaches investment, finance, financial and business management related subjects. Mr. Sum also holds a professional qualification as an ESG Planner from the International Chamber of Sustainable Development (ICSD).
Mr. Sum was a senior executive in a renowned listed investment group and multinational securities investment institution, with over fifteen years of experience in the financial markets in Hong Kong and overseas, including portfolio management, derivatives investment, risk management system design, investment hedging strategy construction, and automated algorithmic trading operations. Mr. Sum is responsible for managing the group's asset allocation, using his extensive experience in quantitative investment, combining financial derivatives and hedging trading strategies to build effective portfolios and hedging strategies to generate satisfactory and stable investment returns for the group and its institutional clients. Mr. Sum has also been involved in the planning of various commercial projects of listed groups in Mainland China, providing analysis and management of the capital and financial operations of development projects. Mr. Sum is a financial expert with both practical and theoretical expertise.
Mr. Sum is a keen educator with extensive teaching experience and an active advocate of lifelong learning. Prior to joining HKU Institute for China Business, Mr. Sum has been a tutor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and instructor at tertiary institution in Hong Kong. Mr. Sum's excellent teaching style has been well received by students and he has been received numerous awards for excellence in teaching.
Since joining HKU Institute for China Business, Mr. Sum has been responsible for the overall academic and teaching administration of the Financial Management programmes. He also specializes in research and analysis, and teaches in a variety of areas including international financial market operations, derivative securities, financial options and pricing models, equity asset pricing, risk management and credit risk modelling, financial mathematics, behavioural finance, quantitative investment strategies, portfolio management and fund management. Mr. Sum is committed to helping students achieve: value creation, value enhancement, and effective risk balancing in the areas of corporate asset management and personal investment through comprehensive and quality teaching and management, to achieve integrated corporate value management.
Mr. Sum holds a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The master’s degree focuses on Financial Engineering and options, and the Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Minor in Business Administration.
