Dr. Donnie Dong
Part-time Lecturer at HKU ICB, Cross-border legal matters Expert, Fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, Harvard University, Former Senior Counsel at Baker McKenzie
Dr Dong has over 15 years of experiences in cross-border legal matters, international intellectual property management and data privacy. He had worked with Ant Financial Services Group, a leading FinTech unicorn. Prior to his position with Ant Financial, he was a senior counsel with Baker McKenzie for nearly 8 years, where he served Fortune 500 companies regularly. Currently, he is the convener of Kunwei International, a community of senior experts.
In the area of corporate offshore and cross-border transactions, Dr. Dong has accumulated extensive experience in Hong Kong and offshore corporate governance, securities compliance and offshore advisory. With his extensive industry experience and professional credibility, he specializes in communicating with corporate founders, executives, product managers and legal departments to provide rigorous, pragmatic solutions that balance risk and reward. Dr Dong has advised clients in a wide range of industries, including luxury, clothing, toys, mobile communication, internet, entertainment, education and publication. He also assisted enterprises of tobacco, chemistry and energy industries in selection and management of overseas counsels in matters of international trade disputes, arbitrations and other legal issues.
Dr Dong has received two doctorate degrees from both civil law and common law systems. He was a fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society in 2009-2011. He is also enrolled in Berkeley Law School at California. Presently, he is a founding member of the Steering Committee for Digital Asia Hub, a think tank collaborated by senior professionals and academics.
Dr Dong was a registered foreign lawyer with Hong Kong Law Society (2010-2018). He also joined several professional or industrial associations, such as the AmCham Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Institute of Trademark Practitioners, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Data Protection Officer Club of Hong Kong, etc.
