Dr Chan is a partner at Albert Chan & Associates in New York, USA. He is well versed in all areas of intellectual property law (including technology transfer, patents, trademarks, copyrights, commercial transactions and trade secrets) and specialises in patents in the biotechnology field. He is familiar with all aspects of patent prosecution and litigation, and has extensive experience in licensing and technology transfer involving intellectual property, as well as assessing the market value of intellectual property portfolios. Dr Chan has worked extensively with numerous U.S. domestic and international companies. He has assisted many scientists and inventors in obtaining intellectual property protection to make them more competitive in their respective fields. Dr Chan's clients include inventors, emerging technology companies, and leading research institutions.

Dr Chan is frequently involved in technology development projects in China, including facilitating joint ventures between East and West companies, entering into contracts and assisting clients in building IP portfolios. For clients seeking to expand their business in China, Dr Chan provides patent prosecution services as well as the equally important service of patent enforcement. He also analyses and evaluates clients' IP rights to determine the scope of protection.

From 1996-2013, Dr Chan was an adjunct professor of law at the City University of New York School of Law, where he taught courses in intellectual property law, patent law, technology transfer, the Internet and the law, food and drug law, and international business law. Dr Chan is also active in a number of legal organisations, including the China-US Intellectual Property Association. He founded and served as President of the U.S.-China Bar Association.

Dr Chan received his J.D. from Columbia University in New York. Prior to that, he received his PhD in Virology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and trained as an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York State. Dr Chan was born and raised in Hong Kong and received his Bachelor's degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
